What is Bariatric Surgery (Weight Loss Surgery)?
Bariatric surgery promotes weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some procedures, altering the digestive processes. As with other treatments for weight loss, the best results are achieved when combined with healthy eating and regular physical activity.
Dr Ghadiri is a female bariatric surgeon who offers a personalised service and will discuss if bariatric surgery is the right choice for you. She will consider your unique health needs and explain which type of procedure would achieve the best outcomes for your individual circumstance.
Am I a suitable candidate for Bariatric Surgery?
Generally, patients who undertake bariatric surgery must have either a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40 if they have no additional health conditions related to obesity, or a BMI of equal to or greater than 35 if they have additional health conditions related to obesity. In certain situations bariatric surgery may be appropriate in those with a BMI of 30-34, and this will be assessed on a case by case basis by Dr Ghadiri. It is important that surgery is only undertaken when the likely benefits outweigh the potential risks.
There are many things to consider when assessing a patient for bariatric surgery. Dr Ghadiri will assess many factors including whether a patient is/has:
Healthy enough to undergo a major operation
Failed attempts at medical weight loss
Absence of drug and alcohol problems
No uncontrolled psychological conditions
Consensus by multi-disciplinary team
Understanding of the risks of surgery and recovery
Understanding the recovery process from major surgery, and the lifestyle changes that are necessary following this type of surgery.
